Dianni's task 1

Dianni’s task 1

(Django unchained) Gender - Gender is the state of being a male or female.Gender is often used to find the audience for a product because it is easily found and only two possible answers. Knowing an audience's gender gives you an assumption of what they would like not the details of their personal likes and dislikes using stereotypes.  Gender equality requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially valued goods, opportunities. Gender equity does not mean that women and men become the same, but that their opportunities and life chances are equal. Django unchained is set just before 1850s and it shows the horrible past with slavery up front with an ironic mix of humor and violence like all of Tarantino’s films. As this film is set in 1850s when slavery was legally around  and women had no equal rights to men, In the movie, Djangos wife gets mistreated badly and gets whipped and punished severely multiple times. In the film Django was classed under the white rich men but still killed them not caring about his class. I believe that this film was aimed at both genders as it is a historic film showing the past with a plot twist of a black male hero trying to save his wife.

(Deadpool) Gender - Deadpool is a marvel film and original comic character and was rated for 15 in the UK. Deadpool isn't your typical superhero, and the good thing is he doesn't try to be. From some surveys that i posed online I got some responses to the questions that I asked, from the results there was a big 75% of the results were male responses and 25% for females. This gave the impression that marvels new film hero was aiming the target audience at a male audience rather than females. But online most of the reviews that were made were from females both negative and positive.

(Django unchained) Sexual orientation - The term sexual orientation refers to the gender that a male or female to which a person is attracted  being heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. In my surveys i asked “do you think that the sexual content is suitable in the movies” and i got a response of 56.3% of the results said that it is suitable and 43.8% said no. Another question that i asked was “do you have a problem with sexual violence” 85.7% said yes and 14.3% said no. From seeing django myself i believe that it sexual content and violence is suitable for the film as it is showing some truth of the past.

(Deadpool) Sexual orientation - Sexual orientation is the term used to describe what gender someone is sexually or romantically attracted to. For this task I created a questionnaire for everyone in my class to answer, the questionnaire was about aimed to find out what each person thought about sexual and violent content shown in horror movies, if they thought the movie may affect people’s behavior and whether they approved or disapproved. I got a 64.7% said that the sexual content was suitable for the movie and 29.4% said no and a 0.9% said maybe. In the film deadpool's character did have a lot of sexual comments and and was also interactive with the audience. From my view on the film i thought that the content was suitable for the film as it was not to sexual and the violence was not in a bad influence way.

(Django unchained) Regional identity - Regional identity  is the profile of someone based on their location, this can go from a country to a town. This is a broad method of audience profiling because, as with socio-economics, people from the same geographic location will undoubtedly have a range of interests and incomes. It is because of this that geo-demographics are most commonly looked at and used in local newspapers/ outlets and magazines. These products aim to deliver information specifically about the area of their target audience as it is the thing that all people of this group are bound to have in common. Django unchained  was set it when most of  black people were slaves, as film you saw two free black men as well as one of them was a bounty hunter and was treated very well. From my django unchained survey the results were all based in south and east london and had similar answers to each other. This was probably Tarantino’s areas that he was aiming to advertise him film too.

(Deadpool) Regional Identity - Regional Identity refers to the where someone is from. It could refer to a general area such a “north” or “south”, a country such as “English” or “Scotch” or specific towns such as “London” or“Manchester. From my survey results all my responses were from London, south and east where the main places, this implies that Tim Miller advertisements for the film where aimed at Deadpool is set in the inner city and is set in the eighth installment in the X-Men film series.

Cultural competence - Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. An example in the film industry of cultural competence is the movie Django Unchained would be a cultural competence is because the film had a black man that was free and not a slave as well as a bounty hunter at killed white men for money, the white people in the film was shocked because people people wouldn't of had the privilege to do anything that django did.

Fan culture - This is the name given to the way that fans have an active inspiration from the media product. An example of fan culture would be fans of suicide squad, people dressed up as the joker and harley quinn and other characters for halloween and at cosplay events. Tarantino’s trait is his love for blood and gore. Many of his bloody scenes are way over exaggerated. His fans are people that like the music, as each movie has a soundtrack so well suited to that movie, the dialogues is in depth that is what describes even the monologues which appear in Tarantino movies. There is also the humor as when there is murder there are things that can make you laugh, one of the main traits that people love are the stories and the violence .

Uses and gratifications theory -  Uses and gratifications theory is a theory based around the question of why and how people actively seek out media. Whereas some theories will look at the question as to what effect the media has on the people the UGT method asks what effect the people have on the media and why it is they will actively consume it. The theory builds off of a history of communication theories and research. It begun in researchers’ studies of radio listeners in the 1940s and it started with Herzog and several other theorists including Laswell, Katz and Bulmer and McQuail have helped develop the idea.

Tims part task 1

(Deadpool) Mainstream – Mainstream in other forms of media that is often defined by widely-accepted and currently popular standards, trends, and hypes that have been established by the media. With mainstream you’re appealing to the masses, it’s what currently sell the most and gain the most popularity. Deadpool was brought to the mainstream when it first premiered as it was the first ever Rated R super hero movie reach received rave reviews targeting not only just comic audience but attracting a more worldwide audience. Even people who don’t necessarily know about Deadpool but went to see it because they liked the actor Ryan Reynolds who portrays an accurate version of Deadpool. Deadpool is a marvel superhero directed by Tim Miller and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool was a commercial success, grossing over $783 million worldwide and breaking numerous box-office records, becoming the ninth highest-grossing film of 2016, the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Reason being is because Deadpool was filled with a lot of action, romance comedy, making the film enjoyable for anyone to go see.
(Deadpool) Alternative – Media that is different from other established or dominant type’s media in terms of their content, production, or distribution. Alternative media take many forms including print, audio, video, Internet and street art. In simple terms it’s “non-mainstream”. The one’s that had watch Deadpool were not really an audience that would consider themselves the “alternative” audience. It was more less people who are comic fans of the film and wanted a good action movie to watch. The film Deadpool itself wasn’t really targeted to that particular audience as that type of audience are more into indie films.
(Deadpool) Niche – A specific type of audience but very complex because the media producer has to target a specific audience and conduct a type of research. Deadpool wouldn’t target this audience because of how difficult it would be to please that type of audience.  Deadpool has a bigger market as it appeals the masses, a niche audience would have a certain style that separates itself from other media products including film.
(Django) Mainstream – Django Unchained is a American western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Set in the old west and Antebellum south. Quentin Tarantino is known as a controversial Director as some of his films have gratuitous violence which would deem unnecessary and too much for some viewers. Another reason is because some of his movies tackle sensitive topics. Django being one of them, as it tackles Slavery in America which was one of the darkest times for black people. This type of film would appeal to the masses not just because of the director or studio making the film, it would appeal because it touches a topic that is still relevant in today’s society. The twist in that is though it touches a sensitive subject there is fictionalise story with in the film. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood feature in the film which would appeal to a wider audience, thus making the film more of a mainstream outlet. The target audience the film is going would be all genders young to old who like western, slavery and action films.
(Django) Alternative – Although Django is a mainstream film, because of the style in which the film is made an Alternative audience would appreciate. This is because Quentin Tarantino has such a worldwide fan base that even some people who wouldn’t necessarily watch a film that’s mainstream but would watch a film like Django.
(Django) Niche – A smaller audience with interest of a specific and probably not so popular genre, this type of audience wouldn’t be a target audience for Django. To appeal to a Niche audience, the film would have to be made in a certain way and fit a certain style a Niche audience would expect. Django wasn’t Intended for a niche audience, that’s not to say it can’t appeal but a Niche audience would expect something different compared to what Django offers.
Hypodermic Needle model also known as the hypodermic-syringe model, transmission-belt model, or magic bullet theory. A model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and solely accepted by the receiver. The hypodermic needle model suggest that media messages is injected straight into a passive audience which is immediately influenced by the message. This was based from early observations of the effect of mass media, as used by Nazi propaganda and the effects of Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. For example, with the increase of popularized media (radio, Television, smart phones) it contributes to the fact that people can get information in a matter of seconds, which means an over flood of messages that will potentially stick with the receiver.
Passive or Active Consumption – Active consumption is when the audience will engage and discuss media messages that comes across to them and sometimes question media messages through life experiences. Passive consumption is when the audience doesn’t engage or question the media message but just accepts it. A good example of this is when the class had to watch Django, that would be considered as active consumption as we watched it for educational purpose. Whereas people who watched outside of college are considered passive consumption.
Censorship - is the suppression of free speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions.
Reception Theory – Reception theory is when producers or directors constructs a text encoded with hidden message or meaning that the producers or directors want to convey across to the audience. This leads to fan theories and also relates to passive or active consumption. An active audience will be able to pick up the meaning or messages straight away, but the audience will need to be reminded of the message throughout the film which can be done in various ways like character dialogue or actions within the film. An example of this is a film called Inception a 2010 science fiction film. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious, and is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for a seemingly impossible task: "inception", the implantation of another person's idea into a target's subconscious. The director Christopher Nolan purposely left hidden messages and meanings which caused a lot of fan theories and open ended questions.

Victors task 1

Django
Psychographics - The study and classification of people according to their attitudes aspirations, and other psychological criteria, especially in market research. Psychographics’ are kind of like demographics.
Psychographic information might be your buyer’s habits, hobbies, spending habits and values. Demographic explain “who” your buyer is, while psychographics “why” they buy
The category working class for Django would be between semi-working class & lower middle class because the audience would be people in college, based in east London, living off the parent’s money, may have a part time job which makes them in the semi-working class.
Geodemographic (Linked to location) - Geodemographic is the study of the population and its characteristics, divided according to regions on a geographical basis. This involves application of clustering techniques to group statistically neighborhood and areas.
Age - We watched Django for our Unit 6, during watching this Gory movie there were many gory violence scenes. Acknowledging that fact, the age minimum would have to be 18+, anywhere from about 18 – 50 years.
The PG rating for the film is 18+
Target audience - Focus groups – This is where a group of people are brought together to talk about something such as a new brand logo, or a website redesign or a new layout for a magazine or newspaper. Their responses will be recorded and then the information will be used to help the design process.
We conducted a focus group to aid our research in the movie Django. The responses were very beneficial which helped us because we gathered relevant data.
Audience Theory - Audience Theory is what the audience thoughts are. there are three different types of audience theory which are the effects model or the hypodermic model, the uses and gratification model and last but not least, reception theory. For Django I would say hypodermic because of the scenes in it.
The hypodermic needle model is a theory about audiences. The idea is that media messages are directly received and accepted by the audience.  The hypodermic needle theory implied that mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effect on its audience.
Uses and Gratifications Theory tries to explain why people consume different types of media and what they get from it.
It looks at how an audience will spend time and energy finding media which will meet their needs.
Reception theory looks at how audiences receive and interpret the media they consume. Stuart Hall has developed this idea for media and communication studies.
The theory has two parts. The first is concerned with encoding and decoding.
Effects Debates - There are lots of debates about what effect media consumption has on its audience.
Some people argue that excessive consumption of certain types of media, violent films and video games for example, lead to people becoming more violent.
The Culmination Theory suggests that while exposure to a single violent film or game is unlikely to cause someone to become violent overnight but, long term, repeated exposure to violence is likely to desensitise people to violence, both in media and in real life.
The Hypodermic Needle model suggests that people will act based on what they have been told or shown. So, if people are exposed to violence, they will be violent.
Effects of Exposure to explicit sexual or violent content - in Django there was lots of exposure to explicit sexual and violent content throughout the whole movie. These sexual and violent content had a huge on impact on the audience viewer’s thoughts of racism in the past.
Effects of advertising - Advertising is perhaps the type of media most targeted at getting the preferred reading from the people that view it. Adverts can have such an impact on their audience, there are lots of rules about what can and can’t be shown and said on an advert. There were a few effects of advertising when it came to Django, this is because promoting a movie that has such cruel and gory scenes that no one should ever have to watch or experience could give out the wrong message. People might think that Quentin Tarantino is promoting and paying lots of money to advertise Django on many different platforms because he is a racist, which he isn’t. So when they were promoting and advertise Django they had to be very very careful in how they do so.
Health Concerns - When talking about Django, a few health concerns occurred such as racism, prejudice and a few other ones.
Deadpool
Psychographics - Psychographics is the study and classification of people according to their attitudes aspirations, and other psychological criteria, especially in market research. For Deadpool, I would say the target audience are most likely to be C1-C2 which is lower middle class – skilled working class. This is because the audience might be skilled manual workers, people in college might be working part time in a field that they don’t see themselves working full time in 10 years’ time, for example they are classed skilled manual workers because they might have a part time job in retail.  The rest of the audience might be C1 which is lower middle class. This means they are supervisory or clerical, junior managerial, administrative or professional.
Geodemographic - Geodemographic is the study of the population and its characteristics, divided according to regions on a geographical basis. This involves application of clustering techniques to group statistically neighborhood and areas.
Age - Dead pool has been aged certified 15 in the UK. The target audience for this movie would be both males and females based around the world, aged 15 – 24 years old, in full time education, may have a part time job, their favourite hobbies include watching movies (especially action and adventure ones) and last but not least, a big fan of marvel movies.
Audience Theory – Audience Theory is what the audience thoughts are. There are three different types of audience theory which are the effects model or the hypodermic model, the uses and gratification model and last but not least, reception theory. For dead pool, would say hypodermic because of the scenes in it. For dead pool I would say it is reception theory.
Effects of Exposure to explicit sexual or violent content – In deadpool there wasn’t so much violence and gory scene like there was in Django so the audience wouldn’t be affected like they would in Django.  Effects of advertising – With dead pool there wouldn’t be any effects of advertising because it’s a children's/young adult movie so there won't be any bad things to say about it whilst advertising.
Health Concerns  So in other words deadpool isn’t as gory as gory, nor there aren’t any sex scenes or racist parts in deadpool.

Final production day 08/02/2017

Today was our final production day for a live shoot with a live audience. As for our shoot as for look good as the audience liked it and they understood what was going on as we had our inserts on the side on the studio of the big screen. Some things that the audience did find that good was the second performance song felt hyped but the artist looked like they had no energy. As being the director I think I did alright and there was not any problems that I came across, but before we did the live shoot we had a practice and that had a few things that we changed to improve on, one thing was lighting we decided to turn all the lights off for the performance and use one that is on the tripod so it would focus on the artist black out anything other than the artist. We also moved the left camera to the side of the artist to get a side view of the performance. One thing that went really wrong was the audio recording as our audio person was not in but the technician set it up so we I just had to press play to record but it turned out it did not record so we have to use the raw recording from the IPad.

From this I got a good understanding on roughly how a TV production works and the amount of problems that you can face, but it was a good experience especially as I was director so I saw everything that went on the in studio.

06/02/2017

Today we had a change of plans with our filming as we had some technical problems with the ipads as the technician had not been in all week so we could not update the software, therefore our teacher asked another teacher to swap our lesson on wednesday to be in the TV studio to do our final production. As we had technical problems we just used to time to do another practice run through, because of the problems with the software we got rid of the teleprompter and plugged in another ipad and got the floor manager to play the clips on the TV screen then we would edit later on.

production meeting 24/01/2017

At the beginning social challenge ended up setting up for their production and i ended up being a guest as usual for there game show, as for the games all are stuff was pre recorded so we did not have to do it again.

Half way through the lesson we swapped over and i took my role of director and we had a guest come in to be on our show, the first thing i did was tell the floor manager to move the table to the correct position, then made sure that everyone was getting ready to take their positions, the only problem we had was that the sound person was very late with the sounds,Other than that some other things need to be fixed up but other than we should be ready for next week. Also we will set up the instrumentals for the guest to rap or sing over. I got some feedback that i did an alight job as a director.

feedback 23/01/27

Today we had a change of plans, instead of the other group doing the production we took over as we have not a a run through because of people not turning up, instead we took over and started to prepare to record, two of our cameraman's did not turn up so we got someone to fill in for us. As director i still had to set up the table and help set up the cameras as who ever was supposed to set up did not do it, our result in the end came out alright even though it dragged a bit and they were not able to know when the adverts or music was playing, but other we need to improve to setting up the equipment.

17/01/17

Our 9am lesson was cancelled due to our teacher being sick and still a lot of students did not turn up,but we still went to the tv studio and the other team started to set up as they had more students to prepare to film their production. The second lesson at 10:20am we were still in the studio as it was our class time to record and the studio was nearly set up, it was just the sound that was left to do. i was doing my role as being one of the guess for the other group.

09/01/17

Today we did not practice our tv show as not enough turned up to do any work and the laptop key was also lost so we could not use the laptops to do any work on blogger or drive so we was let go early to go to another class or to the library. I went to A26 to check up on my blog to make sure everything is up that should be.

camera practice

Today we had the technicians come in and set up the ipad stand and the ipad software and they explained how to use the app and then we had a chance to use the app our self to get a  feel how to use it. we also discussed the finally day that we will do are finally production (01/31/17).
